This product was a disappointment. We wanted a natural, non toxic sunscreen for our trip to the Galapagos Islands (70 degree ecuatorial sun). We coated ourselves with it the first day and both of us came out burned. I wouldn’t recommend this product or buy it again. It is not as effective as a normal 30 SPF sunscreen and people should be forewarned of its limitations when under the sun thinking they are protected.
For those potential buyers who want a chemical free sunblock but don’t want to look like ghosts… Unfortunately, these sunblocks, by their nature turn you white – they have to in order to be effective! They work by blocking the sun’s harmful uva/uvb rays from ever reaching your skin. That is what makes them different from chemical sunscreens – these sink into your skin. The two non chemical sunblocks available are Titanium Dioxide or Zinc Oxide. Both turn you white unless they are made into nano (“clear”) particles. However, breaking them into smaller pieces like this may be harmful (since they might absorb into your skin) and they may not work as well since they aren’t creating a physical barrier between your skin and the sun. So, if you don’t want to look like a ghost, don’t buy chemical-free sunblocks. If you want to be as safe as possible, sport your ghostly countenance with confidence.
As far as those complaining about the smell… I think it smells heavenly! If you like all-natural things, you’re probably going to like this stuff. It reminds me of those herbal aromatherapy heat packs that you throw in the microwave. If you think the smell of lavender and citrus mixed together would stink, don’t get this product – I personally find it heavenly smelling.
This product does go on white and greasy, but the whiteness fades and it really works. (It is also easier to know where you have applied it because it is white at first). My very fair skinned son was at the beach for several hours with this product on and didn’t get burned at all. The smell is not wonderful, but it is not offensive or gross either. The safety of the ingredients was a major reason I tried this and I will get it for him again.
My only complaint about this chapstick is that it turns your lips white. I am not able to wear it out everyday as I expected I would.
I like how the zinc oxide gives the balm a hint on white. This helped me make sure lips were completely covered with protection.
